Understanding Clinical Depression: What It Is, Key Symptoms, and Research

Research Depression: A Widespread but Misunderstood Condition

Depression is one of the most discussed mental health conditions, yet also one of the most misunderstood. Depression can lead to challenges in your personal and professional life as well as the lives of your loved ones. At Redbird Research, we work with individuals who experience these challenges daily as part of clinical studies aiming to improve treatment options.

Clinical Depression: Definition and Symptoms

Clinical Depression, sometimes also called Major Depressive Disorder, is a medical condition that affects your emotional health, physical health, and mental well-being. Depression is more than just feeling sad for a couple of days. Clinical depression can last longer and can make life feel heavy and difficult.

While everyone’s experience with depression is different, some common signs and symptoms include:

○ Persistent sadness or emptiness

○ Changes in appetite or weight

○ Feeling numb or emotionally “flat”

○ Physical aches with no clear cause

○ Trouble remembering things

○ Thoughts of self-harm

○ Withdrawing from loved ones

○ Lack of motivation

Not everyone with clinical depression experiences all of these.

Depression Can Look Different for Everyone

Sadness is not always present with depression. Some people feel emotionally numb, while others feel angry or irritated. Some appear to be fine on the outside but are struggling on the inside. Everyone experiences and displays depression differently. This can affect work, relationships, and even just getting through the day.

Why Early Awareness of Depression Matters

Recognizing the symptoms of depression early is an important first step towards a healthier mental, physical, and emotional well-being. More people struggle with depression than people realize. By continuing to talk about depression and promote conversations regarding depression, it becomes easier to seek support, have healthy and positive communities, obtain resources, and understand your options.

The Role of Clinical Research

At Redbird Research, we believe in the power of clinical trials to affect treatment options. Clinical trials are how we learn what works and what needs improvement. For some people, participating in research is a part of their healing journey; for others, it is a way to help improve available treatment options and care. Taking the first step in understanding depression begins the journey towards healing and a better quality of life. If you have experienced some of these symptoms and are curious about research opportunities, Redbird Research is currently enrolling for studies in this area. You can see if you are eligible here.
